Note to Self on Workaholism
Not only is workaholism unnecessary, it’s stupid. Working more doesn’t mean you care more or get more done. It just means you work more.
The above quote is from Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson of 37 Signals. Rework is one of the smartest business books I’ve ever read but the chapter on workaholism stuck with me even more than the rest.
>Workaholics aren’t heroes. They don’t save the day. They just use it up. The real hero is already home because she figured out a faster way to get things done.
Amen. I don’t mind working late and god knows I’ve worked plenty weekends too. But I don’t do it if I can avoid it because it does influence the quality of my work whether I like it or not. And when I get sick it almost always comes right after a period of working too long hours. Most of the time it’s better to go home and get some rest and try to be more efficient the next day.
